I Heard My Popcorn Calling to Me
I've posted before that one of my favorite foods is popcorn. It really is a good snack. If you aren't doing microwave (which usually has too much salt and bad oils, or is light...in a bad way), it can be a relatively healthy snack. It is also a whole grain (one cup popcorn is one serving of fiber).
I was reading on Slashfood that October is National Popcorn Poppin' Month. Granted, I don't need a special month to make popcorn. However, I'll take the excuse.
Why October? "As farmers head into the fields to gather the crops, families and friends gather to celebrate this beloved snack food."
What really struck me about the post on Slashfood was that stovetop popcorn is either a lost art, or the act of the true maize aficionados.
Really, it just takes a relatively heavy saucepan, some oil, and popcorn. I tend to favor canola oil for popping corn, though I've been thinking about trying some sesame oil. It may be a bit more work to clean up, but I think the output is worth it.

My mom is a lifelong stovetop-popcorn fiend. Eats it for breakfast every single day! I was raised on the stuff.
I have a "Pop-Stir" which makes stovetop corn pretty foolproof, but my mom has always accomplished it just fine with a heavy pot, as you said
