The current Maillot Jaune makes a point I've said. Cycling, by kicking teams out of the most important race, stripping leaders of titles, etc, demonstrates it actually takes a stance against drugs. If you read how the testing works, including blood tests, surprise out-of-competition tests, and other tests, the seriousness of both the problem and response are there.

Other sports seem to tolerate it. The problem ranges from having a testing program that borders on optional, to the point of potentially having folks in the hall of fame as a reward for their semi-obvious drug use.

Tour leader Cadel Evans says critics of cycling need to look at other sports

Evans was quick to add his voice to a growing list which believes that Ricco's test is proof the battle to beat the cheats is slowly being won.

But the Aussie says it's now time for other sports, who may not be so stringent in their approach to anti-doping, to start following cycling's path.

"What frustrates me most is the way people focus on the negative issues surrounding the federations, the UCI (International Cycling Union) and (the Tour's parent company) ASO.

"They're trying to do the right thing and they're being criticized for it."

"What are they supposed to do? Let it all turn into a free-for-all like some sports who don't have any testing at all? Are we going to be complimented for that?"

Interesting article giving a summary of the first US team to compete in the Tour de France. 22 Years later, the US has made quite a mark.

So, when Team 7-Eleven toed the line at the start of the 1986 Tour, its impact was a total unknown and many fans and teams questioned their invitation. Just as was the case this year, back in 1986, the Tour organizers personally selected every team for the race. The UCI was just a sanctioning organization and had virtually no input into the decision on who should race. Team Director Jim "Och" Ochowicz had several meetings with the Tour bosses and the crafty "Och" somehow convinced the organization that his boys could ride.

Tonight, I went to Chipotle, half of the main sponsors of the Garmin-Chipotle cycling team. This is the team in the Tour de France that I'm pulling for. This is, perhaps, the first non-cycling related bike team sponsor (i.e. not a bike store, bike manufacturer, bike clothing maker, etc.) I got to go to during the Tour. They seem to be excited about it, too:

They have been doing fairly well in their first Tour. I get to be an obnoxious sports fan (like the rest of the men in my office (though about other teams/sports).
