I'm determined to have a good day today!
In the summer of 1985, between middle and high school, I bought a copy of the "Chess" concept album. Two cassettes were the music from a musical that had yet to be staged. I played it a lot--I really liked it. However, I never got to see the musical. It did OK-not-great on Broadway, and a touring company never made it to Lake Charles.
Last night, PBS showed "Chess in Concert," a performance of the music performed in 2008. I had forgotten how much I liked the music. It was written by Tim Rice, as well as some of the guys form ABBA.
This is video from the concert taken by an amatur.
My daughter is at a birthday party in Mason, Ohio. While she has fun, I set up shop at a nearby Starbucks. A register Starbucks card with $5/month of activity covers my WiFi (I'm a frequent customer, so the WiFi is simply a perk with no extra effort).
My summer afternoon drink is a venti black iced tea sub raspberry (instead of the "basic" syrup). It procudes a nice, red drink that is quite tasty. Everyone comments on how good it looks, but no one ever seems to try it.
For the rigorous standardization, I've noticed each Starbucks takes on its own character, or at least seems to have its own core audience. I mostly frequent one in my office building. Downtown locations all seem to have business folks, most of whom are regulars who want to get in and get out. The staff is almost always fast and efficient. The Columbia-Tusculum shop was the site of my most expensive trip, due to the purchase of the work of a local artist. A trip to another location seemed to have a significantly older crowd.
Sunday afternoon in Mason seems to be soccer moms and teenagers. The mood is rather relazed. While I think they are doing a good job, there isn't the same weekday-morning urgency of downtown.
For about the past month or so, they've been selling a Talking Heads compilation called "Same as it Ever Was." I was a big Talking Heads fan in high school, so it's been a bit of a nostaligic treat to hear some of their music when I walk in, especially as it includes things that didn't hit the mainstream. I gave half a thought to buying a copy, with the cover photo being a retro shot of David Byrne and company. I flip it over, and discover that I already have most of the music.
Right now, it sounds like a reggea compilation. I'm not much of a reggea fan (though I love ska--go figure).
Anyway, I hope everyone else is having a mellow Memorial Day weekend Sunday.
This evening, I took my beloved to Starbucks, to load her Starbucks card (true romance is knowing what she really wants for Valentines). "In Your Eyes" was playing, and this occurred to me:
Yep, I made the observation, demonstrating to my wife with my iPhone. Not sure what the young pups thought.

iPods on random pull up cool things. With all the talk of barracudas, there are even more awesome things in Heart's catalog. I especially love the acoustic intro.
At a festival, I kept seeing toy balloons float away. I always cringe--if we're not careful, it might trigger a nuclear war!
